I intentionally didn’t show you every detail or write about which books went with each area because part of the magic of Bookworm Gardens is discovering the clever details for yourself. One of many garden details that made me smile Just outside the tea house was the Zen Garden fenced in bamboo. Set under the canopy of tall hardwoods, the tea house was decorated with a Japanese tea setting on a low table looking out over the gardens. It was the sense of peace that made me love this part of the gardens. Tea house and Zen Garden Tea House and Zen Garden Ring the Pooh’s bell and open the door for another smile. The garden designers even set the stage inside his home in a tree. Pooh’s house felt absolutely true to the stories. I love Pooh (classic). I still read it once in a while…by myself. I own the Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh’s house at Hundred Acre Wood Pooh’s house at Hundred Acre Wood I could have spent a lot longer relaxing in the tree house, but P was off and running, excited about the next amazing thing he discovered. Leaning over the railing, listening to the sound of the raindrops hitting the leaves was unbelievable. Maybe because I’ve listened to the audiobooks repeatedly or maybe because my son is so enthusiastic about Jack and Annie or maybe just because I love tree houses, but I wanted to plunk right down in one of the Adirondack chairs and start reading a good book. There are plenty of seats and benches in each area for you to sit down, read the books and do activities together. The book nooks are filled with the books represented in the gardens. What I will try to do is, show you the features that called to me the most. Did I mention it was raining? Yep, still magical.Įach of the gardens has a theme and a book nook. Yep, still magical. There’s no way I can relate in this blog post just how fantastical this place was. Frankly, we felt like we were walking into the books. Bookworm Gardens was able to capture the feeling of each book and translate them into interactive garden settings. Movies can’t even get it right with all their millions of dollars of special effects. ![]() It’s another to have someone capture it in a garden. It’s one thing to see a place in your mind’s eye as you read about it. Copies of Magic School Bus books and laminated activities sat on the seats leading up to where Ms. ![]() I knew as we entered the school bus from the back emergency door and headed towards the front, that this garden was something magical. We were lured off the sidewalk by the Magic School Bus’s siren song. We didn’t even make it as far as the visitor’s center. It even had wings! The three of us could hardly wait to start exploring the literacy-themed gardens. P practically tore through his seatbelt trying to get a better view of the Magic School Bus. Yes, folks, that’s what happens to book nerds like me when they get excited about books. We drove past the edge of Bookworm Gardens on our way to park the car. P was contradictory, demanding, disrespectful and whiny at times throughout the afternoon. For those of you who have the impression that life is perfect at Casa Field Trip, you’re wrong. Disclosure: While the field trip was super, my son’s behavior was not.

![]() ![]() It is highly unlikely that Sarah Winchester felt responsible or guilty for the manufacture of firearms-and she did not hesitate to invest and spend the money she earned from them."ģ. "A sense of pride was more likely than one of guilt. "People associated with the company and those who wrote about it most often looked at it as an American success story," she says. Ignoffo suggests we are viewing those stories with 21st century eyes, and that, at that time in history, shame would have been far from Sarah's mind. Tour guides say that Sarah felt consuming guilt over deaths caused by the firearms. This photo shows a small Winchester gun museum contained within the house. Sarah Winchester was ashamed of the Winchester Rifle legacy. "Winchester's own letters explain that she sent workers away for months at a time." Requests for an interview with officials at the Winchester Mystery House have not been answered at this time.Ģ. According to the website, construction lasted day and night for 38 years. The legend as reported on the Winchester Mystery House website: A medium told Sarah that she was being haunted by spirits of people killed by the famous gun, and she would die unless she started building a house and never ceased. They did not start the rumors-many began while Sarah was alive-but according to Ignoffo, they embellished the stories wildly and made up new ones in order to sell tickets. Five months after she died the Brown family, long-time carnival workers who rented the house, held a public tour and kept on going, eventually buying the property and making it one of the state's top tourist attractions. Here's the history in a nutshell: Sarah Winchester, the wife of William Wirt Winchester and heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune, moved to San Jose in 1886 and began building a house-a very large house whose rooms numbered 160 at the time of her death (although before the 1906 earthquake, it was much larger). The house was under construction for 38 years. In her tell–all book, Captive of the Labyrinth, Mary Jo Ignoffo lays out her research and findings, and today she shares the biggest deceptions surrounding one of California's top tourist attractions.ġ. To learn more about Sarah Winchester’s impact on Los Altos, visit the Los Altos History Museum, conveniently located within steps of Enchanté Boutique Hotel.Winchester Mystery House in San Jose is everyone's favorite haunted house, where candlelit tours and all the lore suggest that you might run into ghosts.īut here's the rub: According to a book by a local historian, the “mysteries" that attract thousands of people each year were manufactured by a family of 1920s-era carnies who first leased and then later purchased the property. Is it a coincidence or another Sarah Winchester Mystery? We’ll let you decide. So, thanks to Sarah Winchester, more than one hundred years later, another passionate female developer, Abby Ahrens, was able to build her own “Daydream,” Enchanté Boutique Hotel, on the exact location where Sarah’s property came to a point. They parceled off the land to developers, who then created what is now beautiful downtown Los Altos. Southern Pacific was forced to purchase the entire property. She ultimately lost that battle, but not without making her point. ![]() She was not going to allow them to put the horses at risk or devalue her land, and fought long and hard to stop them. In the early 1900’s, Sarah learned that the Southern Pacific Railroad had plans to run tracks through her property, making it difficult for the horses to travel to their watering hole. The sisters referred to the house as “El Sueño” – or “The Daydream.” Isabelle and her husband, Louis Merriman, lived in the home and Sarah lovingly made many additions to it for them. The property included what is now the oldest inhabited home in Los Altos, the Winchester-Merriman House. In 1888, she purchased 140 acres of land with the intention of raising carriage horses. Sarah was only 46 years old at the time, and was far from a pushover. After her husband William passed away, Sarah and her sister, Isabelle, moved to California from New Haven, Connecticut. While it is true that Sarah suffered from rheumatoid arthritis in later years, she was far from the meek woman she is often made out to be. She is typically portrayed as a reclusive, feeble woman who spent her life trying to keep a curse on her family at bay by continuously adding to her San Jose home, the famed Winchester Mystery House. Much has been written about Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company fortune. ![]() From TYT, MD380 Tools and also on original S13.09. To be honest I always wanted to be a writer more than I wanted to be an artist. I like both, and it really depends on my mood, but lately? Writing. Which do you prefer more, writing or drawing? My process is Chaos and Hoping For The Best.Ĩ. But even then I added 20 pages and rewrote large sections of it from the initial draft. For AWLY I went the more traditional route of having a script, getting it edited, then going to art. I don’t really know how I pulled that off. I think for Commander Rao I did the thumbnails, went straight to art, and then wrote all the actual words retroactively. Do you have a process for writing and drawing? I’m grateful for the opportunity to see my comics in shops and at the hands of readers around the world!ħ. There aren’t that many publishers with open submissions, and Commander Rao was my first Self-Published comic, so I honestly figured I’d just shoot my shot and see what happens. You mentioned earlier that you are now getting the chance to publish Commander Rao and And We Love You through Scout Comics, what led to that happening? I am admittedly not fast at either process. As you are both writer and artist for your stories, would you say its a lengthy process to finish them? Sometimes it’s hard to explain how you feel, and I figured, why not just show people by making them feel the same way I do? Share the pain!ĥ. I’m not great at comedies, so I decided I’d make everyone cry instead! That, and the comics I made all stemmed from some personal experiences that are hard to put into words. So comedies should make people laugh, and tragedies should make people cry (or feel dead inside). I think whatever kind of story you tell, a good story is one that can effectively make the reader feel whatever you want them to feel. What made you decide to go in the non happy endings direction? Generally, we all seem a bit obsessed with romance and happy endings but in your stories, while the romance is there, the happy endings necessarily aren’t. When it ended I found out the story continued in the comics, so I scoured the land ( the GTA) for comic stores hoping to find copies of the comics! On my journey I ended up buying Batwoman: Elegy as well, which loops back to my comic origin story haha.Ĥ. ![]() In high school I watched all of Disney’s Gargoyles for the first time and became obsessed. Outside of creating comics, what got you into comic books over all? I think that’s what really convinced me that comics were the ideal medium to tell my stories in! But during the tail end of high school I picked up Batwoman: Elegy and was blown away by its beauty. I’ve always loved storytelling, it was one of my dreams since middle school to become a writer. You’ve got quite the resume under your belt when it comes to making comics, what was the deciding factor for you that led you to wanting to be involved in making comics? Both of which are available now from Scout Comics! In my free time I like to draw sword ladies and play video games.Ģ. Hi! Thanks for having me! LayerLock Powder-Coated PEI - A textured, flexible build surface that can add a unique look to your 3D prints.Let's take a look at each surface individually: If you're having difficulty, bump the temperature up by 5☌ at a time until adhesion improves.Īs for the bed surface itself, you have quite a few options to work with, keeping in mind that it's not an exhaustive list, just the big players. 50% is the maximum you will need for extreme overhangs or short layers, otherwise you are free to leave the fan off for the best layer adhesion possible.įor the best chance of success, you will want to make sure you have a heated bed set to 65☌. Some PETG is more warp-prone than others, so higher temperatures may be required to give them enough adhesion to the bed. Layer cooling is only occasionally necessary. This does depend on the 3D models actually being printed, as moderately sized models can be printed without cooling and come out beautifully, but tall and thin models with short layer times may need some gentle cooling to hold its shape. An easy way to avoid these concerns is to swap over to an Olsson Ruby nozzle or a Nozzle X when you want to use these materials. Sparkly filament isn't abrasive despite having non-PETG material in it, but it's common to add carbon-fiber to increase the stiffness and strength of the finished 3D prints, which is extremely abrasive. In general, PETG is non-abrasive, but once you start playing with additives it becomes a case-by-case basis. For the most part, PETG does require an all-metal hotend to be able to tune your filament to its fullest, as in while you may have successful prints at 240☌, you don't achieve full strength until 255☌. PETG's printing temperature is right at the threshold of the temperature that PTFE begins to degrade, so some 3D printers might be able to get away with lower-temperature PETG filaments that have an ideal temperature at 240☌ or less. Some 3D printers utilize a PTFE (teflon) lined hotend as it is easier to manufacture than a hotend that is all-metal from the heatsink to the nozzle. Essentially, start with 245☌ and play around with 5☌ higher or lower to find the ideal print quality for you. Some have additives that bring their printing temperature significantly lower while others bring the temperature significantly higher. There are many variations to the PETG formula, which makes specifying one temperature to print at a difficult claim. Or you can design a part that needs to rigidly hold something else without being too difficult to insert, like a bearing holder on a 3D printer part. Snap fit enclosures, where small tabs bend out of the way and snap into a channel once a lid is fully pressed in place, are a beautiful opportunity to utilize PETG. With PETG you can also take that ductility and use it in the design of some purposefully flexible geometry. It's the different of printing a PETG shelf bracket that's starting to droop and a PLA shelf bracket that dumps your books onto your desk and monitors. In contrast, PETG will bend a little before it breaks, so you can see a failure before it happens. Where PLA may be able to withstand more force without breaking, when it hits the threshold where it'll break it is very sudden and without warning. If you're used to printing with PLA, then you might not have considered a unique attribute of PETG: that it's ductile. In terms of print settings, across all these variants they will be approximately the same, with some minor tweaks here and there to reduce stringing or improve layer adhesion. ![]() This can make it seem like these are many different filaments when in reality they are just slight variations in the formula to create a material that is more translucent, stronger, or more flexible. You’ll often see references to PETG in one of the following forms: PET, PETG, PETT, and many others. When used as a 3D printing filament, PETG has found its home as the more accessible "durable 3D printing filament" due to its relatively stable 3D printing properties that make it easy to print and yet capable of being in low-heat or high-strength environments. ![]() Basically any clear plastic bottle is going to be made of PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) or PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate with a glycol modifier) and in fact many consumer 3D printers utilize PETG or some derivative to makeup their 3D printed structural components. PETG is an extremely common polymers used today that you likely encounter without even realizing it. ![]() another distinguishing feature of is its integrated lighting, which includes a red taillight and white led running lights along the sides. the ‘qu4tro’ can climb steeper grades hold more weight (280 lb/127 kg) that the rest if the competition. this reduces weight to 17 lb (7.7 kg), not bad considering this board has four motors rather than one or two. Helping the 34-in (86 cm) ‘qu4tro’ achieve its performance, acton ditches classic maple wood for a stretched octagonal carbon fiber deck supported by an aluminum chassis. the 35 km range is decent no matter how you put it. none of these numbers stake the claim as ‘world’s best’, but the combination is still quite impressive. these four motors combine to 1600 watts of power, that includes a 35 km (22 mile) range 37 km/h (23 mph) top speed and hill climbing capabilities up to 30 percent. it takes the motors from the underside of the deck, and places them inside the wheels. acton follows suit with the ‘qu4tro’, using all-wheel-drive simply to enhance on-street performance. Not every automobile with all wheel drive is necessarily an off-road utility vehicle some high-performance sports cars, including the new bugatti chiron, make use of AWD technology. while you shouldn’t make the mistake of recognizing this title in a market as ever-changing as electric skateboards, in case tomorrow proves otherwise, the blink ‘qua4tro’ safely has the combination of components and design yet to be seen from other boards. now acton is growing the ‘blink’ range, and the ‘qua4tro’ becomes the most advanced electric longboard to date. at 7.7 lb (3.5 kg), the lite weighs about a pound (0.45 kg) less than others that have made ‘world’s lightest’ claims. The american manufacturer currently offers the ‘blink lite’ and ‘blink’, calling the former the lightest electric skateboard on the market. it is also introducing two boards: ‘blink S’ and ‘blink S2’ for getting from A to B. ![]() this is proving pretty easy for acton, which uses a four-wheel-drive hub motor system distinct hexagonal deck aluminum and carbon fiber construction and integrated lighting to make its ‘blink qu4tro’ the first ever premium board with all-wheel-drive. New electric skateboard models are hitting the street regularly which is great news for interested consumers, but may be a little tough for new manufacturers looking to distinguish their boards from the pack. |
